A Black Man’s Review Of
“Step Brothers”

Movie Biases:
Stupid. Silly. Summer. SOLD.

Major Players:
Co-writer/actor Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, producer Judd Apatow, co-writer/director Adam McKay

Brennan (Ferrell) and Dale (Reilly), fortyish sons who still stay at home as overgrown children, are forced to live together when their parents fall in love, initially hating on each other, but eventually uniting in order to find a job that will propel their lazy selves out of the house.

The Deal:
I’m working on a short film. Yes, I’m talking about myself because, quite frankly, my life is more interesting than this movie. So, I’m working on a short film. The concept is a little bit of bottled brilliance. We’re shooting it this weekend and it’s so freakin’ brilliant in only eighteen minutes, it’ll probably end up blazing through YouTube and Ferrell’s own little comedy site FunnyOrDie.com. The most brilliant thing about this brilliant little short film that is to be filmed (brilliantly, of course)? IT’S SHORT.

Fifteen minutes, sixteen tops. That’s how long our film is - and how long “Step Brothers” should have been. Hilarious high concept with two extremely capable (if not typecast in the case of perpetual man-boy Ferrell) leads. A producer with a current comedy track record that, a year ago, was second to none. The director/collaborator from “Talladega Nights” and “Anchorman”. All the elements seem to be there, right?

Unfortunately McKay - Ferrell’s chief enabler, er, co-conspirator - once again just rolls out the cameras and presses record. The script is about as thin as a communion wafer. An aimless, pointless, dunderheaded excuse for wholly ad-libbed juvenile humor not even a juvenile could enjoy. This potentially fun but limited concept showcases two men so emotionally retarded that the term overgrown children doesn’t even begin to describe these prepubescent losers. When not introducing the other to the finer art of teabagging or sleepwalking, our two no-tagonists are so aggressively selfish and socially stunted that it’s hard to give a damn about what happens to them. At least “Anchorman’s” Ron Burgundy was softened by his dog.

What’s left to cushion us from the slowly diminishing shine of the once sterling Apatow brand (”The Forty-Year-Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up,” “Superbad”)? Do YOU remember “Drillbit Taylor,” another Apatow production? Hell, I didn’t even SEE it, the trailers looked so bad. While “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” scored, “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” sucked. It makes me fear for the upcoming “Pineapple Express,” another “From the Guys Who Brought You Superbad”-touted Apatownian event - this time in buddy action comedy mode - boasting only modestly amusing trailers and commercials. With creative constipation like “Step Brothers” clogging up the comedy intestines, it feels like Mr. Apatow - AND Will Ferrell, for that matter - needs a cleansing of comedic proportions, stat. Before my short film crew and I flush them out ourselves. Brilliantly, of course.

If you can’t sneak in, don’t go in.
