NINTH GRADE IN THE SHADE

My nephew was born during my ninth grade school year. In a couple of weeks, he will graduate from high school. Dear Baby Jesus, I’m old…and much too depressed to write a proper intro. Enjoy these videos from that year while I sip some prune juice, apply a little Ben Gay, and tell these damn kids to get the eff off my lawn. Holla!

K-SOLO | “MOMS IN MY BUSINESS”
“Ya moms. Ya moms. Why is she so nosy?” This is the song that made me swear off marriage. OK, not really. It did kind of scare me though. I thought all moms were meddlesome and intrusive. And of course, most of them are. I kid. I’ve met some very cool moms. But old chicks love me, in general. They think I’m an upstanding young man. If they only knew what devious things I had in store for their daughters. Cue sinister cackle.

MARIAH CAREY | “VISION OF LOVE”
Believe it or not, there once was a time when Mariah was all about the music and not about wilin’ out on TRL, showing MJ her breasts, starring in execrable movies, or shamming the world into thinking she really loves Nick Cannon. Speaking of said tetas, they look just a TAD smaller back then. Maybe she was just a late developer. OK yeah, probably not. Anyhoo, that Christmas my mom bought me a CD player along with this album. That’s not very gangsta, but I was the only kid on the block with a CD player so HA HA!

DJ JAZZY JEFF & THE FRESH PRINCE | “SUMMERTIME”
“Back in Philly we be out at the park.” Still the unquestioned, number one summer jam of all time. Say what you want to about Will as a rapper, but he Ken Griffey’d this one out of the park. Perfect beat. Smooth, relaxed lyrics. What more could you want? p.s. I’m dedicating this video to my boy Mizzo. See, I don’t hate everything out of Philly. Just those Godforsaken Iggles! lol

BBD | “I THOUGHT IT WAS ME”
“The girl was serious.” Overalls. Why? Dear God, why? Anyway, for some reason this song perfectly sums up ninth grade to me. The guys look like they’re having so much fun in the video and even though I hated school, I had an absolute blast that year. Remember when you used to have fun? You didn’t have to worry about bailouts, high gas prices, salmonella in your peanut butter, or horrific Kanye West hairstyles. I remember. Them were the days.

D-NICE | “THEY CALL ME D-NICE”
“I’m the TR-808. But just call me D-Nice.” This beat…this beat…I wanna take it to my bedroom and remove its unmentionables. Sorry for the visual…
