GREY’S IS GOLDEN!

“Grey’s Anatomy” has hit its stride and got its groove back! I’m a big fan of the show. We all know this. I have been on the band wagon from day one. However this season I’ve had my criticisms. Specifically I was not feeling the Denny story line which I felt had taken a show grounded in real life emotion to a fantasy world that I really didn’t like. When I want to be confused by the real or unreal and get angry that the show I liked has become something else, I tune into “Lost”!

Grey’s Anatomy is proof that when talent is given time to grow and find its way, which is rare on network television, not only will it shine, it will burn with true brilliance! That’s what I saw Thursday night. I saw writing that was crisp and imaginative performed by an ensemble cast that looks like they’ve all found “that place.”

It’s a little shop talk but let me explain what I see. On every show you never know what will be a hit. For the first couple weeks everyone is looking over their shoulder wondering if they’re going to be fired and if they don’t get fired will the show get cancelled. It’s not fun. All you can do is try and focus on the work and let the rest take care of itself. Once you know your show is a hit, or in other words, the closest thing to job security that you can have on television, everyone wants to shine. Not from an egotistical point of view, most times anyway, but in the sense that you want to do your best work.

Writers who were only worried about seven episodes now have to start thinking about one hundred episodes. Actors who just wanted to keep their jobs start thinking about who their characters really are on deeper levels. Chemistry between actors gets better in the same way you hear basketball teams get better the more time they get to play together. Once an entire cast and crew have a season or two to experiment and get comfortable, then “it” happens. You see magic on screen. Writers see things in an actor’s performances that give them new ideas for the characters and new story ideas. Actors get to try new things and go to deeper emotional places based on new stories from the writing staff. You hit a place where you don’t have to worry about anything except being as creative and as good as you can be.

That’s what I saw on Grey’s. It was one of their best shows ever!

Another sign of how good they are, even the guest stars are bringing the thunder! It can be intimidating to be a guest star on a hit series. It’s like being invited to someone’s house for the first time. When you get there, everyone is family and you’re the only outsider. They’re playing a game and having a blast! Laughing, eating, drinking and back slapping and it’s clearly fun for everybody. Then they ask you to pull up a chair and get in the game. You don’t know the rules, you don’t have any food and you’re not sure if you need one drink or twenty! What you do know is that you don’t want to be the one who makes a mistake. You want to be as good as everyone else.

On a set, that process is helped when the stars of the show extend themselves to the guests. It’s a professional courtesy that is not always offered but always pays off to the show and professionalism of our craft. Judging only from what I see on screen and the extra ordinary performances by guest stars like Ben Shenkman who played the husband widowed by Derek, the spirit of artistic respect exists at Grey’s. That’s what empowers guests to be as good as those who work there every day.

When you add performances by Faye Dunaway, Eric Stoltz, Mary McDonnell, Loretta Devine and other stars Grey’s is back to it’s emotional center, powerful and captivating. It will tempt a brother to shed a tear!

The ratings reflect it too. Against the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament, Grey’s ratings were up! I can’t wait until next Thursday!

Let me get my remote!

It’s funny to me that dead Denny story was annoying other folks too! Sister Lakeisha mentioned the war trauma storyline and it has me intrigued as well.
You know how folks have viewing parties? Imagine video, of a Grey’s viewing party…whole lot of tears and tissue in that picture! LOL
