CAMPBELL BROWN,
CUT THE BULL!

I like Campbell Brown. She’s a terrific member of the CNN news team. Campbell’s star rose significantly with hardnosed reporting and questions during the presidential election process. Contrary to right wing spin, Campbell was fair to both sides of the aisle. Unfortunately, her recent claim that President-Elect Barack Obama needs to be more “forthcoming” about the investigation of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich isn’t “Bias,” it’s just “Bull.”

Here are the facts. U.S. attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald has said the complaint makes no allegations of wrong doing by the President-Elect. President-Elect Obama confirmed he had no contact with Gov. Blagojevich, added that he was appalled by the allegations and what was reportedly said by the governor on the wire taps and called for the governor to resign. So in a situation where he’s accused of doing nothing wrong and confirmed he has done nothing wrong, why are Campbell Brown and a few fringe Republicans challenging the President Elect with not being “transparent?” Incredibly, it all stems from a portion of the wire taps read by U.S. attorney Fitzpatrick which, presumably, were intended to further distance the Obama team from the appearance of any wrong doing. The quote said that the Obama team would only give the Governor their “appreciation” in return for his pick to fill Obama’s vacant Senate seat, to which Gov. Blagojevich said “’bleep’ them.”

So what’s the problem? Well, Ms. Brown contends in order to rebuff any corrupt activity, as did who ever told the Governors’ representative all they would get is “appreciation,” there had to be contact with someone from Gov. Blagojevich’s office and the Obama transition team. She goes on to say “we can figure some of this out on our own” and asks a few questions. What was the conversation? Did they tip off the U.S. attorney? Did they know what Blagojevich was up to? If they so, did they fail to report it? Then makes the leap to suggest failure to answer these questions is a failure by President-Elect Obama to be transparent. Huh?

Let me get this straight. The man accused of doing nothing wrong, who said he did nothing wrong, who wants the bad guy to resign and has a staff member who acted honestly, ethically and principled, is having a cloud of suspicion cast over him by not speaking out more, about what he hasn’t done and on activities of which he has no knowledge or by finding out who the staffer is, that acted honestly, ethically and principled. Is this a joke? Was it a slow news day?

This is nothing new to President-Elect Obama. The attempt to connect some sort of guilt by association to him was tried all during the campaign. It just wasn’t done by Campbell Brown and CNN.

No one is perfect. There may be a time where the Obama administration has to be held accountable by the media. If that time comes I will turn to credible sources like CNN and Campbell Brown. Don’t burn your credibility by crying wolf. Don’t undermine your authority as hard news journalist by describing the President-Elect and his transition team with a flippant term like “Obama World.” Don’t say you understand the reason for the President-Elect saying so little, so as not to compromise an ongoing investigation and then slam him for not saying anything more.

When Obama and his staff behave in a manner consistent with his promise and his word, you don’t have to praise them, just report that without the…you know.

Let me get my remote!

I’m disappointed as well it is clear on the tapes that Obama’s hands are clean. This has the potential to be some Ayers mess all over again. The media is always looking for something so salacious and that’s the problem. Things get magnified that shouldn’t. This isn’t theater, this is life. TV goes too far sometimes.

I’m w/ Ginger. I’m sure Campbell probably has a Facebook group or something. Rick Sanchez and Don Lemon do, and they often read their comments right on the air.

Have to wonder how Campbell Brown’s deals with producers at CNN who make the networks go. They must create “tension” with viewers, or else the programs would be totally boring.

Boston has recently had its share of FBI probe targets. Massachusetts’ only Black Senator who happens to be female was indicted several weeks ago for allegedly taking bribes. Its not over yet. She has pleaded innocent and the community is keyed to the outcome of this.

I admire anyone seeking a career in politics as an officeholder. At AboutBlackBoston.com we feature a long history of Black Political firsts in the state beside other things going on in the city.

I think AMERICA hopes President-Elect Obama will not be diminished by the situation in the news about the seat he has vacated.

I think this amounts to “not much” against OBAMA, so I will continue to ignore the reporting in the news cycles.

He’s not a “looney lefty” but on the challenges ahead of us – the economic woes and so on – perhaps he should be by doing something extremely radical.

Sorry I couldn’t add any comments last week, but my hard drive crashed and I was cut off from the tech world.
I think we’re all in agreement. Seems like Obama is just being used for ratings. Now that Rahm Emanuel has been “cleared” of any wrong doing, now the media is trying to cast a cloud of suspicion over him!
Funny how the media is all over the Obama staffers who are not accused of any wrong doing, but have said NOTHING about any of Blagojevich’s staff members who must have been helping him with his schemes.
Good news. Most of America isn’t fooled. Obama’s approval ratings are holding at 75%!

I am not a fan of Ms Campbell, who tends to create news instead of just reporting it and so I cannot vouch – like you, to have ever witnessed anything that has resembled “hard-nosed,” “investigative” or even “journalism” by her. But Darryl, you are too quick to leap to the conclusion that Obama can’t be involved at all which and for a journalist of any grade, this is like putting your head in the sand. Where is your passion for inquiry and truth – even in all its unflattering forms: the good, bad and ugly? I really hope he is not involved as this will as distract for him as it will be disappointing to all of us. If he has nothing to hide, then quite honestly, he simply shouldn’t and he should continue to be forthcoming instead of citing vaque sensitivities of an on-going investigation and going radio-silent. Huh? How can he possibly affect an open investigation when he has no involvement? Unfortunately, they have discovered more conversations that have included Obama’s Chief of Staff with Gov B as a result of those journalists who haven’t lost their objectivity and refused to accept “no” in their pursuit of the truth on our behalf. These conversations are specifically on this topic of suitable replacement candidates and there is nothing wrong with that, but in your role of framing and leading discussions in this forum I find it a great disservice to all of us, who depend on you to get to the bottom of it and hold those elected and trusted – every last one – to a simple and consistent standard of honesty and integrity. Keep up the good work – I enjoy the reads. Go Barack!
