WHAT IT DO ’92?
1992. Bill Clinton becomes the first black president. The Cowboys wrap the NFL in a cocoon of terror that lasts for four years. As a 16 year old, my cousin took me to my first strip club. The Mirage. It was an experience, for sure. The recap of that night would be one heckuva…on second thought maybe I should just keep quiet about those events. I will say this though. I’ll never get the smells of a ghetto strip club out of my nostrils, and I’ll never be able to un-see what I saw. Fun times, indeed. Thanks cuz. Holla…
EPMD feat K-Solo & Redman – Headbanger
EPMD FEAT. K-SOLO & REDMAN | “HEADBANGER”
“My style’s mad funka to the delic with the irrelevant ish…” After seeing this video for the first time, I was like “Wow. This dude Redman. Incredible.” At this point in time, EPMD were legends and K-Solo was a well respected artist. Redman was still a neophyte, yet he completely DESTROYS this track. He just performs all types of unnatural acts on this joint. Someone should’ve called the Feds on him. No, seriously.
DIGABLE PLANETS | “WHERE I’M FROM”
“What’s hip? Well hip is just the norm.” Ahhh. Feel that? That, my fine pedigree chums, is the breath of fresh air that Dig Plans brought to the game some 16 years ago. They were jazzy. They were hip. They were different. They were good. Real good. Unfortunately, they split too soon because I have a feeling they had a few more classic albums in their holster.
THE BRAND NEW HEAVIES | “HEAVY RHYME EXPERIENCE”
“Don’t answer. Here comes the flavor.” Wait. Live instruments and hip hop? Really? In 2008, marrying live instrumentation with hip hop is not that big of a deal. But back in 1992, it kind of sort of was. A lot of cats didn’t know what to think about the album, but I loved it. As a matter of fact, I still bump it to this day.
MARY J. BLIGE | “REAL LOVE”
“No, it’s Mary J. Ain’t a damn thing change.” Baseball jerseys! You guys remember those? I wanted a University Of Miami jersey soooo badly in 11th grade. Too bad my mom wouldn’t come up off the $150 to get it. Anyway, this was our first introduction to Ms. Blige and we were collectively blown away. Hip hop and R&B merged and it was beautiful. Everyone get up from your desk, couch, bed, or floor give Mary J a round of applause. I’m dead serious. Right now people!
ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT | “REVOLUTION”
“So people let us wet our pallets. It’s either the bullet or the ballot.” Ahh, it’s time to get your consciousness on. I love the chanting in the background. It just has that nice groove, you can’t help but repeat as you bob your head. Oh yeah, this is a semi-shout out to UTC commenter Travis Utley who stumped me with some Arrested Development trivia last week. Apparently the show “Malcom And Eddie” used “Tennessee” as it’s theme song. Yeah, Travis you got me. But Malcolm & Eddie? Dude I’ve spent as much time shaving my legs as I’ve spent watching “Malcolm & Eddie.” But yeah you got me:)
