WHAT IT DO ’92?

1992. Bill Clinton becomes the first black president. The Cowboys wrap the NFL in a cocoon of terror that lasts for four years. As a 16 year old, my cousin took me to my first strip club. The Mirage. It was an experience, for sure. The recap of that night would be one heckuva…on second thought maybe I should just keep quiet about those events. I will say this though. I’ll never get the smells of a ghetto strip club out of my nostrils, and I’ll never be able to un-see what I saw. Fun times, indeed. Thanks cuz. Holla…

EPMD feat K-Solo & Redman – Headbanger

EPMD FEAT. K-SOLO & REDMAN | “HEADBANGER”
“My style’s mad funka to the delic with the irrelevant ish…” After seeing this video for the first time, I was like “Wow. This dude Redman. Incredible.” At this point in time, EPMD were legends and K-Solo was a well respected artist. Redman was still a neophyte, yet he completely DESTROYS this track. He just performs all types of unnatural acts on this joint. Someone should’ve called the Feds on him. No, seriously.

DIGABLE PLANETS | “WHERE I’M FROM”
“What’s hip? Well hip is just the norm.” Ahhh. Feel that? That, my fine pedigree chums, is the breath of fresh air that Dig Plans brought to the game some 16 years ago. They were jazzy. They were hip. They were different. They were good. Real good. Unfortunately, they split too soon because I have a feeling they had a few more classic albums in their holster.

THE BRAND NEW HEAVIES | “HEAVY RHYME EXPERIENCE”
“Don’t answer. Here comes the flavor.” Wait. Live instruments and hip hop? Really? In 2008, marrying live instrumentation with hip hop is not that big of a deal. But back in 1992, it kind of sort of was. A lot of cats didn’t know what to think about the album, but I loved it. As a matter of fact, I still bump it to this day.

MARY J. BLIGE | “REAL LOVE”
“No, it’s Mary J. Ain’t a damn thing change.” Baseball jerseys! You guys remember those? I wanted a University Of Miami jersey soooo badly in 11th grade. Too bad my mom wouldn’t come up off the $150 to get it. Anyway, this was our first introduction to Ms. Blige and we were collectively blown away. Hip hop and R&B merged and it was beautiful. Everyone get up from your desk, couch, bed, or floor give Mary J a round of applause. I’m dead serious. Right now people!

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT | “REVOLUTION”
“So people let us wet our pallets. It’s either the bullet or the ballot.” Ahh, it’s time to get your consciousness on. I love the chanting in the background. It just has that nice groove, you can’t help but repeat as you bob your head. Oh yeah, this is a semi-shout out to UTC commenter Travis Utley who stumped me with some Arrested Development trivia last week. Apparently the show “Malcom And Eddie” used “Tennessee” as it’s theme song. Yeah, Travis you got me. But Malcolm & Eddie? Dude I’ve spent as much time shaving my legs as I’ve spent watching “Malcolm & Eddie.” But yeah you got me:)

I was 10 and it was all about Arrested Development. Now they seem corny. But you’re right that beat is tight.

I’m in denial that 1992 was 15 years ago. It truly seemed like yesterday. These songs are a part of my young adulthood. They don’t feel as old as a person going for their learners permit. Daaaang!

Those groups like Arrested Development you know they went underground we still need that conscious talk otherwise who else will do it?

I didn’t know anyone else dug that Brand New Heavies album. It was definitely a new revolutionary thing and it is a prized part of my collection

November 24th, 2008 at 12:38 pm Diallo Tyson says:

@Thelma
You got me. Consciousness isn’t exactly a hot topic nowadays:)
@just2bee
That album was one of the most slept on albums of the past two decades. I’m actually surprised the Heavies don’t get sampled that much.

I had to stand up for Mary J. My co-workers now officially think I am crazy! Thanks Diallo.

November 24th, 2008 at 2:58 pm Diallo Tyson says:

You actually got up out of your seat? Reader of the Week goes to Ashley!

November 24th, 2008 at 3:51 pm Destah Owens says:

@Thelma: I sure do miss consciousness too. Those were the good ol’ days when hip hop taught you names like H.Rap Brown and Huey Newton instead of Bishop Don Magic Juan or SuperHead.

Mary J’s joint takes me back to DC in the fall of 92…howard homecoming…ben’s chili bowl…

And I still keep digable’s greatest in the ipod. If you don’t like brand new heavies, then you just don’t like music. Neo soul before soul knew it was neo…

“Neo soul before soul knew it was neo”
I’m stealing that. Just thought I’d let you know.

Oh I’m getting heated in a good way.
Buttafly from Digable was on my wall for years. He is dope. The group was groundbreaking and I miss em!

I was disappointed in that album from Ladybug a couple years ago. SHould have been better or they need to get back together.
What the world needs now….

Man I feel ya’ll on BNH. I mean, besides those Siedah Garrett years they were beyond dope. Jazz, funk, soul, sick vocals- what more could ya want!
Perfect description, Destah!

November 24th, 2008 at 11:20 pm CeaseNYC says:

I’m sorry Elsa. You cute & all. And you been a tried & true UTC OG for a good minute. But if you don’t take that EPMD blasphemy back…

November 25th, 2008 at 4:07 am Diallo Tyson says:

I have to agree with you on that one Cease. Elsa, you’re being put on timeout:)

November 25th, 2008 at 12:51 pm Krista Wills says:
