WE CAN, WE DID, AND WE WILL!
“…But with God all things are possible” Matthew 19:26
Barack Obama: “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer!”
At those words I got chills…and this morning, there is so much going thru my mind. My emotions since last night ebb and flow from cheers of joy to tears of feeling totally overwhelmed! My God, it has happened!
At first the words of Dr. King echo in my head, when he spoke of a day when a black man would be judged by the “content of his character and not by the color of his skin.” And today this has happened in the most tangible way…sending a clear and unprecedented message to the world, that the sacrifice of our ancestors was not in vain.
Then my mind does a re-mix to my hip-hop connection and the lyrics to NAS’s Black President flows thru.
[Hook: Tupac]
And though it seems heaven sent,
we ain’t ready to see a black President
And though it seems heaven sent,
we ain’t ready to see a black President
Yes We Can … Change the World (Change the World )
(They Said!)
And Yes We Did! We elected our first black President!
Grateful is how I feel at the moment. Absolutely Grateful!!
Finally, I’m thinking about my Grandfather who shared with me these words, “See what God can do!” “Yes sir.” I said. I totally agree this is a moment of divine destiny bigger than any of us. This is the faith I grew up knowing and continue to hold on to, and will continue to share with the world, that with God all things are possible. Our efforts married with divine destiny…makes all things possible!!
Now, once we’ve had time to appreciate and celebrate this monumental shift in reality, the work begins for all of us to work just as hard to help make other dreams possible: like equitable education for all children, improved housing benefits, safe neighborhoods, economic empowerment for the poor and disenfranchised, seeing an end to senseless gang violence, curing the disease of poverty and hunger and the list goes on.
And because WE did it, elected the first Black President, then we most certainly can tackle the issues of our day-to-day realities and make a Change!
We can, We Did, and We will….
