FASHION ROYALTY
Dear Lovelies,
Introducing ALT!
ALT- Andre Leon Talley is Vogue’s Editor-At-Large and my self proclaimed Godfather. He is so “major” when it comes to fashion. I could write an entire blog on him alone. He writes a sweet column in the mag called ‘Life with Andre, detailing his jet set life of runway shows, celebrity gown fittings, events, and more. It totally inspired me to write. While “we” haven’t reached that platform as yet, I like to include quotes from his books and columns into my writing called “In the Spirit of ALT.”
So, In the Spirit of ALT, “What you’re looking for is that one special moment… [Its] not about spectacular one-way fireworks.” Fashion is repetitive and translating trends to your body type and budget can sometimes seem more intimidating or trickier than it has to be. Not to worry, that’s what I’m here for. This fall /winter season there are some great trends to play with. For the more simple and classic personality the minimalist trend is very hot. It’s a combination of muted colors, long and lean silhouettes, and lots of stretch. Magazines are great resources for interpreting trends according to your shape.
I received a few comments requesting tips. While I don’t have an assessment of each person’s individual wardrobe I can make a few suggestions: Opaque Tights (not leggings)- are a great way to add some “oomph” to every ensemble. At about $12 (for moderate brands) stock up on them in different colors, and textures. In California tights are a great mediator between your summer dresses and the winter weather.
Dressed to Vote!
While most people don’t really plan out their “poll wardrobe,” it seems like this political season every detail counts. While I do believe everyday is a great day to look your best, I am recommending, rather warning, that you save your Obama gear for another day. While we haven’t seen much apparel support for McCain other than buttons, this specifically applies to the Obama fans. Due to the strict restrictions against campaigning on voting pole premises, anyone wearing Obama gear will be turned away. This is considered campaigning. Translation; they will do anything to ensure Obama does not receive voter support and take the presidential seat. Spread the word.
Shout out to fellow Howard alum Brandon Broussard and sister Lorielle Broussard, at Barack-A-Wear, for their smart and innovative concept tees Barack the Vote!
Behind the Seams!
June Ambrose was the go-to stylist for many years for artists like, Missy Elliott, Jay Z, Diddy, and many more. Since then she has expanded her brand into television, books, and even non-profit work. I sat down with June and Grammy nominated artist Tamia, who is known for her sultry power house vocals, for this weeks
”Behind the Seams.”
June showed off her toned décolleté in a demure strapless white dress that had the sweetest pleating. Tamia stood out in a bright coral wrap dress, with unfinished details.
Although they are opposites in profession, they have many similarities in their choice of charitable contributions, life, and style. June’s comedic banter and Tamia’s infectious laugh made the afternoon feel less like an interview and more like reminiscing with girlfriends about bad hair days and impulse shopping.
How did you choose what you’re wearing today?
June: I needed something effortless, simple classic statement. I didn’t know what my environment was going to be, I wanted something demure, and white it was the closest thing to being “born again.”
Tamia: I live in a warm climate, and I like color. I was also thinking something that was easy to pack in my suitcase; I was determined to carry my entire luggage on the plane.
Worst style memory?
June: I bought this Fendi pony, pink, spotted cow skin overcoat at a sample sale. It was tragic darling!
Tamia: Ooh! When I was thirteen, I had high hair, and we’d used sugar and water to hold it. Oh, and a blow-dryer. It was horrible.
How old were you when you received your first pair of designer shoes?
June: When I could afford to buy them myself, 19.
Tamia: 18.
Favorite place to shop in LA?
Tamia: The secret is to have stylish friends; they can get you all the hook-ups.
June: I’m a department store girl; I just think you can find more classic pieces… that you can return!
Boots or heels?
June: Darling always in a heel, darling!
Tamia: I’d take a wedge because with mom’s it’s a compromise.
June: But you never get kissed in a wedge!
Sunrise or Sunset?
June: Sunrise, again we’re mothers. I’m a morning person.
Tamia: Sunrise, its quiet, the birds are chirping, and the house is quiet.
Favorite color?
Tamia: Neon, and classic white.
June: Neon, as a punctuation!
Favorite flower?
Tamia: Gardenia.
June: Orchid.
Describe your “last supper.” What would you wear and serve?
June: Gaultier kimono, I see drama! Dolman sleeves, embroidery, things with texture. I would probably serve a Moroccan stew over a nice bed of couscous.
Tamia: Wow! Can I be a guest at her dinner?
Totally Obesessed,
xoxo Love
