GETTIN’ GROWN

I celebrated a birthday this summer, and I find myself thinking more and more about my childhood and what type of man I thought I would be when I reached this age. This is definitely not the life I expected when I was walking across that stage twenty years ago to pick up my high school diploma.

Wow! Twenty years is a long time, but for me it has taken that long to grow from a boy to a man. Yeah, I thought I was a man when I was twenty-five and living carefree. I thought I was a man when I was married at twenty-eight. Realized I wasn’t the man I thought I was when I was thirty-five and divorced. I’ve been blessed with a wonderful life so far. The hardships that I have gone through are nothing compared to those experienced by many folks.

Looking back, I am proud at how much I’ve changed.

Top five things I thought I would be doing now when I was eighteen:
1) Retired from the NBA and starting my own financial services company.
2) Dating either Sheila E., Janet Jackson or whatever singer is hot at the time
3) Own a big house on the lake in Seattle.
4) Attending the college graduation of all of my younger cousins
5) Mentoring young men to achieve their dream.

So, dear readers… how does your life differ from when you dreamed as a youngster? Do you think you’ll still achieve those dreams?

Man you are bringing it home.
The dreams of children are not the dream of men. Now I jdream of making ends meet without breaking my back and my spirit to do it. I want to fish a little, ride my Yamaha a little and be happy with my woman.
If you asked me 20 years ago the list would be like yours just substitute Jane Kennedy for Number Two. Ha!

I am living my dreams. I always wanted to be a nurse and that is what I am. I wanted a sweet boyfriend and that is what I have. I wouldn’t mind losing a few pounds but overall I am content. Thanks for asking the question because I never asked myself that and I am happy with my answer very much.

Man life never did quite turn out as I imagined at this age. I wanted to be a traveler writing about my adventures. Now I work at a desk. But hey, at least books can take you anywhere!

We all set goals but I think its important not to be too hard on ourselves if it doesn’t turn out exactly as planned. Sometimes life has its own plans for you so roll with it and know we are blessed and always in the right place at the right time!

I thought I would be retired by 35. That has come and gone and I am still grinding. #5 is very attainable maybe you should consider doing that and getting your list down to 4!

I get reflective like this around my birthday too but I always stop myself. God has me right where I should be not where I thought or think I should be. I like to think about the present not the past. Let’s keep it moving.
