CATCH 22
Can America Move Beyond Catchphrases to Realize the True Meaning of Change?
I must admit to growing frustrations regarding the sincerity of most Americans, who during this election season, have professed a serious commitment to “change” in this country. Away from sign waving and wearing pins and buttons, I’ve seen no real effort put forth by the majority of my fellow citizens to move our nation towards a society where real change is a way of life. Instead, people are merely giving lip-service to a catchy and benevolent campaign slogan, while their actions remain firmly rooted in maintaining the status quo.
Like other well worn election year platitudes from the past (remember “read my lips,” and “where’s the beef?”), I believe that this move towards change will soon dissipate, even if Barack Obama is elected president.
The fact of the matter is that to effect real change in America would mean permanently alter the status quo as it now exists, which would transform this country into something that it’s never been in history – a real land of opportunity. An America where real change took place would be a place where its citizens regardless of class, race, religious beliefs or sexuality, would be on a level playing field to win or lose, fail or succeed based on individual ability and merit. This nation may be ready to elect a black president, but I seriously doubt if the majority of its citizens are willing to go that far.
As always, only time will tell…
