CATCH 22

Can America Move Beyond Catchphrases to Realize the True Meaning of Change?

I must admit to growing frustrations regarding the sincerity of most Americans, who during this election season, have professed a serious commitment to “change” in this country. Away from sign waving and wearing pins and buttons, I’ve seen no real effort put forth by the majority of my fellow citizens to move our nation towards a society where real change is a way of life. Instead, people are merely giving lip-service to a catchy and benevolent campaign slogan, while their actions remain firmly rooted in maintaining the status quo.

Like other well worn election year platitudes from the past (remember “read my lips,” and “where’s the beef?”), I believe that this move towards change will soon dissipate, even if Barack Obama is elected president.

The fact of the matter is that to effect real change in America would mean permanently alter the status quo as it now exists, which would transform this country into something that it’s never been in history – a real land of opportunity. An America where real change took place would be a place where its citizens regardless of class, race, religious beliefs or sexuality, would be on a level playing field to win or lose, fail or succeed based on individual ability and merit. This nation may be ready to elect a black president, but I seriously doubt if the majority of its citizens are willing to go that far.

As always, only time will tell…

we all know that the slogans are just that, slogans. but it helps a lot to get people behind an effort i think the catchphrases at least open a dialog

Your real change transformations sound pretty broad Mr Robertson. I think people wanting change is powerful enough as a start in a world that runs on stagnation. With the right visionary laedership, the desire for change will can be transformed into concrete activity.

September 29th, 2008 at 8:52 pm Elsa Harkins says:

How do you think people who want change should be behaving exactly?

September 29th, 2008 at 9:00 pm Regina Holloway says:

I hear what you mean.
We have to practice what we preach.
I for one work for the Obama campaign.
I say I want change and I work for it.
I make phone bank calls.
The first step to change is getting a leader in office who believes it too.

Please go to http://www.voteforchange.com to register if you haven’t already. It is very easy folks. Like Gil Robertson says, if you say you want change, you have to work for it!

I disagree totally & wholeheartedly with the negativity for negativity sake. You give no concrete solutions or theories. You are just downing people who want something new & are fearless enough & faithful enough to hope & have faith for it.
I believe we are ready for a black president & enough people WILL go that far.

I think Obama’s slogan, “Time for Change,” can be achieved. However, in order for this goal to be reached, we all have to be on the same page. We all have to come together and do the right thing!
