YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH: CAMPAIGN TV ANALYSIS

We’re all watching the Democratic Convention. We’re all listening to the same audio. We’re seeing the same pictures. When will someone comment on what they saw and heard instead of what they want you to believe?

Here are the facts. Barack Obama has been leading in the polls in a general election versus John McCain for almost a year. Seven out of ten Democrats who voted for Hillary Clinton were supporting Obama prior to the convention. Obama leads by 20% with all women nationally. You don’t win the nomination for president, of either party, without white men and white women voting for you in large numbers. The polls have not shown in any tangible way that they are accounting for the masses of young and newly registered voters who have and will vote for Obama. (has any pollster called you?) Yet, any time you turn on the television you keep hearing about “the problems” Barack Obama has. The problems he has with Clinton supporters, the problems with white man and women, the problems with people getting to know him, the problems, problems, problems. Huh? I hate to keep going to the same well, but it’s the dreaded Jedi mind trick. Tell everyone how the man in front, the person winning, has a problem.

Republicans are outstanding at campaigning. They’re lousy at governing. Look at our economy, our image abroad, the housing mess, the war in Iraq, our lack of ANY credible energy plan, the poor and homeless without any health insurance and let’s not forget the 9.5 trillion dollar national debt. That’s what the Republican’s have done to us and themselves. Why isn’t someone saying that every time an anti-change voice steps up to the microphone?

The Republicans are faced with losing the majority in the House and the Senate and next, The White House, all to a man who will be wildly popular with Democrats and with our allies abroad. That would render them virtually inconsequential in our power structure. To make matters worse, they have to go into battle with a candidate most of them don’t like or want. Listen to conservative talk radio and all you’ll hear is how John McCain is worse than Obama, on immigration, he better not pick a pro choice VP, how they can’t stand how chummy he is with Joe Lieberman and even THEY can’t believe he doesn’t know how many homes he owns.

As a result, they can’t win this election promoting their guy, they can only invent deficiencies in Obama.

Now that Joe Biden is the VP pick, Hillary has endorsed Obama…again. President Clinton has endorsed Obama…again. You keep hearing that they haven’t reversed themselves on Obama’s capacity to be Commander and Chief.

Isn’t that exactly what an endorsement is?

But let’s play along. The Republicans want to stick to the narrative that Obama isn’t ready. Fine. The facts are, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton did say that…and they both LOST! When will someone speak the truth? When is someone going to say that’s precisely why the current crop of Republicans can’t govern effectively? They take a losing strategy and refuse to change, even when it’s proven to be a bad decision.

I’m tired of watching television and having someone tell me my eyes don’t see and my ears don’t hear.

I’m tired of the cherry picking to find the one sad sister, who’s the exception not the rule, crying about Hillary to advance your “storyline,” when my eyes and ears just saw and heard thousands of women and men shouting their approval and support.

On that note, if you didn’t see Ann Price-Mills on CNN, it was a sight to behold. She did ask a question I’d like to answer. She asked would we let someone straight out of Harvard be a CEO. The answer is yes. There was a guy who not only became CEO straight out of Harvard, he even dropped out to do so. His name is Bill Gates.

One final note. Don’t miss the HBO documentary “The Black List.” It’s terrific!

Let me get my remote!

The networks have space to fill. Its just like the Olympics. Pulling every single little background story and putting it under a microscope to manufacture emotion and create “good tv” - we can’t listen to it. We have to seek out real news and stop watching all this crap

Its a shame in this day and age that the truth can’t be told loud and proud. All the slants and angles and analysis really takes away from reality and unduly influences voting and our opinions… I honestly don’t think people even know how to make their own judgements and draw their own conclusions without consulting the television. Shame.

August 28th, 2008 at 10:22 pm Darryl M. Bell says:

HOT DAMN!

Barack Obama just walked up to the door of history. But he didn’t walk through it…HE KICKED IT DOWN!!

Yes, there were tears in my eyes as he walked to the podium. When he accepted the nomination for President of The United States of America, I jumped out of my chair! Even though I knew it was coming. To see him and hear him with the back drop of 80,000 strong and lines stretching for miles hoping to get in, 45 years after Dr. King, I wasn’t dreaming, this was real and Barack Obama is the MAN!

They say John McCain has picked his VP. Whoever that is, after tonight, he or she is dreading the pick. They just got a first class seat on the Titanic.

Brothers and Sisters, I looked into the faces of the crowd and I saw America! Every race, creed and color. There is no segment of our country that hasn’t joined in the movement for change.

Here’s the real problem. I told you the Republicans are good at campaigning. They’re good at sound bites, slogans and rhetoric.

Obama is better! What’s more is truth and the facts are on his side.

Once again, television has allowed us all to share history!

Bring on the debates! Bring on the negative spin! Don’t get the kitchen sink, get the bath tub!

It doesn’t matter…

YES WE CAN!!

OBAMA DID HIS THING TONITE

August 29th, 2008 at 12:52 am Darryl M. Bell says:

I have to add a stunning footnote.

I just watched two people for whom I have the greatest respect and admiration, give profoundly horrible reviews of Sen. Obama’s speech.

Dr. Cornell West and Dr. Julianne Malveaux on the Tavis Smiley Show were not just unhappy with the speech, Dr. Julianne Malveaux said Sen. Obama didn’t deliver “at all” and called his speech “a white washing of our history”

Both of them felt Sen Obama did not pay enough tribute to Dr. King and Dr. Malveaux went on to say he didn’t talk enough about poverty or Katrina.

I’m going to be honest. These are two of our best and brightest and I must speak with a respect these luminaries have earned.

However, I cannot reject their impressions of what we all heard this evening strongly enough.

Dr. King has his own holiday. Most of us pay tribute to Dr. King by word or action almost everyday. His children were invited to speak and pay tribute to him directly.

Tonight was not the night for Sen. Obama to speak to the nation and the world about Dr. King. It was time for him to speak about himself, and HIS vision for our future. To shape and contrast the choice between himself and Sen. McCain.

He did that and so much more.

I am stunned. I mean truly stunned by their reaction.

I got it. We all knew what was in play. We knew the significance of the day. When he mentioned the “preacher” we all knew who he was talking about. It didn’t need to go any further.

Barack spoke like a presidential candidate, not a civil rights leader and that’s EXACTLY what I wanted and what the country needed.

I just can’t believe they missed the point.

Sadly and respectfully.

August 29th, 2008 at 10:28 am Lena says:

I believe those two on Tavis were on point. Blacks are the only ones who feel shackled when it comes to speaking on “our” issues. Bill Richardson and the other latina educator from New Mexico had no problem shouting out to “their” own in Spanish last night…and you better believe they’d never shy away from addressing issues unique to their community for fear others will find it offensive. Jews wouldn’t care either. Blacks are the only ones who must compromise while watching other groups go from strength to strength. We are conditioned to always accommodate every one else but next expect it the other way around.

August 29th, 2008 at 10:28 pm Destah Owens says:

I’m glad to see that I wasn’t the only one. Phones went wild up in my camp as soon as that crying lady had a mic shoved in her face by CNN. I’m w/ Chica on the MSNBC thing, but even they can be a little overbearing. For Barack’s speech last night we checked out C-SPAN. Now THAT was the way to do it. Not only was it television sans talking heads, but they showed EVERY single speaker…even little Barney Smith from Indiana. What was so beautiful about it all was that there were 20 of us that got together to watch Barack speak and we did it potluck style. It was like a Superbowl party. Imagine that? Black folks getting together for something other than a sporting event. Lots of standing ovations, cheers and tears up in there.

Hi Darryl,

Great segment!

I look forward to reading what you will say about the McCain’s pick for VP…

Reality far better and wilder than fiction.

You can’t make this up.
