ENTERTAINMENT/MUSIC/OPINION

The Game Done Changed….

It’s amazing nowadays. It seems that every hip hop listening session I attend is being covered by more non-blacks than I’ve ever witnessed before! Now, don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the fact that the music and culture I grew up on is being appreciated and covered by all races. I love that it is being accepted internationally. But, I have to ask: where are the black representatives?

With so many blogs, websites, magazines and television shows covering hip hop, it seems as if the voice that was once ours is being taken away from us. You know, know, like rock and roll. The universal appeal is still strong, but the trend of blacks actually making money off this entity is minimal when you see the people running the labels, the radio stations, the distributors, the magazines, the retailers, etc. Will we be shut out of our own creation again?

If this pattern I am witnessing continues, it’s going to get to a point that we will be unable to attend press conferences or anything involving hip hop in the very near future. I also fault publicists, managers and label heads, because when the artist is still underground, bubbling or just coming out, the urban press gets first dibs.

We are the ones that make sure to let the world know when these artists are coming out or how hot they are. Yet, the minute they chart, make noise and sell some records, we get taken out the loop for the sake of the MTVs, Rolling Stone Magazines and more ‘national’ publications!

But, lo and behold, if these same artists fall off or need that buzz again, guess who gets that email and phone call? This is a sad situation indeed. I’ll be monitoring this for years to come…

What do you think?

We have to get more kids in college so that we can get more execs in every industry including the music industry. Sometimes I feel like kids are too interest in being the rap star and don’t now where the real money and power are in the industry.

It is, but just like rock and roll, it the future, they may consider Hip Hop, ‘white music’

They may be disappointed when we start to ignore them the way they ignore us! But, I can’t always blame the artists. I’ve talked to publicists and managers in the past about this and they usually all agree that the mainstream media is ALWAYS top priority once they hit the spotlight. They strategically choose to ignore the very ones that help them get to the main media unless, of course, MTV doesn’t want them anymore… I try to continue to support them because you try not to turn your back on ‘family’ (And by family, I mean hip Hop) but it’s gonna get to a point where it’s not gonna matter because the black publications will be non-existant because the non-black ones will be invited to everything Hip Hop

What usually happens is that when some Blacks ‘get the nerve’ to do something like that, they either get bought out or ‘discouraged’ (Remember Bill Cosby trying to purchase NBC?) OR ‘others’ throw something at them to make them change their mind, whether that’s threatening their own livelihood or throwing money at them so they will be happy enough with the pennies thrown at them.

I am the industry version of Tommy from the Martin show. I ain’t got a job!

But, seriously, that’s hard to describe. I own and operate my own website called, The Industry Cosign: http://www.theindustrycosign.com, I am an event promoter in New york City, I am a writer, a networker and an All Around Good Guy…. I have been involved in this field for over 21 years and have no plans on leaving anytime soon….

I agree but they don’t have to go to school to achieve that as well. I do agree that kids should go to college to achieve these goals but I don’t want them to feel that if they don’t or didn’t, that they can’t be successful.
