1993 Was A Good Year

1993 baby! Remember when gas cost $.92/gallon? Remember when “Rap City” was still relevant? Remember when you could pig out at Taco Bell for less than $5? Remember Cross Colours? Yeah, like I’m the only one who had orange, red, green, and purple jeans. Don’t front on me! Lol, anyway, here are a few tracks from my 12th grade year. Those were cool times. Holla.

GANGSTARR | “MASS APPEAL”
These cats are representing the east coast to the FULLEST! Take that Kamal. Yeah, I’m a jerk. I have good intentions though :) Anyhoo, not trying to start anything, just having fun.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT | “EASE MY MIND”
“When the sista’s say it, you know it’s gotta be real.” I liked this track back in the day, but “Zingalamaduni” sunk like a sack of bricks wrapped in plaster of paris. Too bad, because this was a nice jam to cruise to on a Saturday. Plus, the hook is so on the money. I’ll be damned if I don’t need some time to ease my mind nowadays.

JANET JACKSON | “ANY TIME, ANY PLACE”
“I don’t care who’s around.” This song was the joint in high school. Wait, it’s still the joint. Janet just took it to another level. The beat? Dope. How does Janet look? Dope. As a matter of fact, I’m gonna stop writing now. My words can’t do this video justice. Just enjoy.

LORDS OF THE UNDERGROUND | “HERE COME THE LORDS”
As a senior in high school, I was like “Dope! Is that what college life is really like?!?” Then I got to Morehouse, and was like “Oh. I guess not.” Lol, anyway, I thought this was an underrated album. My boy bumped it one night when we went to kick it. I borrowed the cassette, and he hasn’t seen it in 14 years :)

And now…for something all the way live…

SNOOP DOGG | “LADI DADI”
I don’t really need to say much about this joint. When I saw this live, I was in complete awe. You just didn’t see hip hop acts backed by live bands that often, if at all, in the early 90’s. Snoop and crew totally wrecked it.

Dang I wish there was a delete button cause I forgot whose blog this was and I know you going to burn me with some smart alleck remark but Gangstarr is not the juice, Diallo, and Arrested is the epitome of one-hit wonderdom.
Don’t hurt me too bad. :(

Anytime, Anyplace…yes, I remember being a “grown-up” and on my own for the first time in an apartment on the Westside. I used to watch that video and then daydream about “Anytime, Anyplace” with that special guy. Too bad it only ended up being “Same time (2:40ish a.m., post-club), Same place (my futon)” with that very unspecial guy. Oh well - at least a girl can dream.

Sweets! I thought we were cool. Wha happened?!? I’m just gonna let this one slide. You probably partied too much this weekend. You’re not thinking clearly. I’m gonna chalk it up to BBQ hangover:)
@Ken
No doubt. People don’t realize how hard it was to chop that sample. guru is the master.
@Diane
Lol. I can almost hear the lament in your voice:)

So much and so little time -
Ok 1st Gangstarr deserves mad respect. Guru’s voice alone should put them in the hall of fame. It was grimy as hell but he made it work B4 it was the trend.
Premier on The beats is just not a question or a conversation. Premier is the sicest of his generation next to Terminator X.

“You just didn’t see hip hop acts backed by live bands that often” is not the same as “There were no live hip hop acts before Snoop.” Come on people! We’ve gotta do something about this BBQ hangover business:)

I’ll stay out of the hip hop debate.
I just want it to be known that I did want to actually be Janet in this video.
Plus in the Thats They Why Love Goes video with then Shaka Zulu, now Gary “Scrumptious-Even-Tho-I-Take-Crack” Dourdan.

I LOVE Janet Jackson

July 7th, 2008 at 2:29 pm buttabrown says:

I agree with ya’ll. Sexy lyrics and beats more than made up for Janet’s lack of SANGIN’ ability. It all worked. Now, uh - I don’t know what happened. She needs to get back to the basics

I’ll admit it. I bought BOTH Arrested albums. I’m not proud, but I was all swept up in the movement!

I always enjoy these videos even though I don’t know most of the people. I do know Janet Jackson and Snoop Dogg this time though! Ha! I also enjoyed the Ease My Mind one.

Oh My God! Gang Starr/Snoop/Janet - you have no idea how you just brought it back for me. I’m now at work blasting these videos. My coworkers either love you or hate you right now!

And yes, I remember cross colours!
