Hot Fun In The Summertime

Memorial Day, while not officially, is the traditional start of summer. Therefore, I decided to play a few jams that epitomize the summer aesthetic. Even though you can bump these tracks during any season, they were made for the summertime. It’s time to stock up on charcoal, armor-all, your favorite libations, Skin-So-Soft, and have some fun this summer. Holla.

NAUGHTY BY NATURE | “FEEL ME FLOW”
“We heard hip hop needed another anthem.” This song brings back so many good feelings. It was the summer after freshman year, and all I did all day was watch videos, play Nintendo, and eat pizza egg rolls [don’t ask]. Ya’ll remember MTV’s Summer Beach House? I know the fellas remember Idalis. ‘95 was really the last summer where I basically just chilled and had zero worries. That was so fun.

MONTEL JORDAN | “SOMETHING FOR DA HONEYZ”
Lark Voorhies. Damn. Ya’ll gonna have to give me a minute.

All right, I’m back. I don’t think I’m hurting anyone’s feelings when I say that Montell wasn’t the greatest singer. But, he was effective doing his thing. He wasn’t effective for very long, but that’s neither here nor there. This jam works on every level. At any rate, you guys watch the video, while I go back to thinking about Lark.

KRIS KROSS FT. SUPERCAT | “IT’S ALRIGHT”
Seriously, can Supercat get some work out here? A remix? Somebody’s mixtape? Puff? Jay? 50? Kanye? You mean to tell me, can’t none of you cats use this dude on a track? NOBODY? Seriously? Well that’s too bad, cause he’s the one that really sets this joint off. The Chris’ are just OK, and I’m being generous, but Supercat takes it to another level. This track is definitely one to ride to with the top down.

DJ JAZZY JEFF & THE FRESH PRINCE | “SUMMERTIME”
“Give me a soft subtle mix.” Best summer jam of all time? Hell jeah it is! If you disagree, you better have one humdinger in your back pocket, cause I can’t see it. Perfect groove. Perfect vibe. Perfect lyrics. Perfect video. Bump this. I’m heading to the park to peep out some light-eyed honeys…and brown-eyed honeys too. Don’t want to ruffle any feathers?.

And now…for something a little funky…

ZAPP | “SINBAD SUMMER JAM ‘98”
Roger Troutman was a genius. Further explanation is unnecessary. RIP

Wait a minute! Two people hating on Roger and Zapp? Do you know how much these cats were sampled in the 80’s and 90’s? You must be under the age of 20, right? lol

Man…When Computer Love came on in the club–any club–the battle lines were drawn and it was time to find out who was leaving with who. Couples came out the woodwork–even the ones creepin’. It was usually the last track played and the lovely you were diggin’ could be yours if you had the right game.

Remembering all these fondly. Montell was it for like 12 months. Blasphemy on Roger & Zapp to these younguns.

Once again, good stuff D. I’m not really feelin’ the Montel joint. I like his other one (get it on tonight) better, and folks always say that brotha looks like me so I always cringe at the mention of him, but that’s another story.LOL. Supercat was always nice. I doubt not that you’ll get Dolly My Baby with Biggie up here soon. Yeah, sean who?! Summertime is as timeless as the Kool and the Gang sample that it uses. Finally, c’mon kamalp. Roger is NICE! Without Roger, there would be no sean kingston or snoop dogg or akon acting like they can sing because they’ve got the help of a synthesizer. Most strong hip-hop has some strong funk element to it and Roger was all about the FUNK! I saw Roger and Zapp perform with ice cube, snoop and several others at a summer jam years ago and they were the ones that turned it out. No comparison.

Mizzo, clubs used to play slow jams? Tell me about this ancient time? lol
Destah, you do kind of look like Montell. Sorry pimpin:) And yes, that “Dolly My Baby” will be going up in the near future.

Young man, you always take me back to the good stuff! I remember that Montell Jordan. Thought he would be around for a while — what a business

I’m feeling you, I may be a lil young, but that Will Smith “summertime” was the anthem!

June 2nd, 2008 at 11:51 pm Diane Brown says:

It ain’t summer time without “Summa-summa-summa time”…by far, the best Fresh Prince jam for me

But, I’m from Long Beach. Gotta start the summer singing the Dove Shack’s “Oohhh-Oh-Oh, Aahhh-Ah-Ah…Summertime in the LBC - Damn, it’s hot than a motha, I’m smotherin’ ribs with barbecue sauce…”

Okay, I’ll stop now.

Diane, I’m definitely feeling you on that Dove Shack. It would’ve been posted here, but I already posted it a couple weeks ago:)

Rita, and everyone else, thanks for the love.
