Ladies First!

A couple of days ago I realized something. What’s that, you ask? Most of the people who leave comments on my posts are women. I thought to myself, “Yeah. Yeah. Need to post some ladies.” Unfortunately, my inner dialogue isn’t all that riveting. At any rate, this week is all about the ladies. Enjoy!

MARY J. BLIGE: “BE HAPPY”
“Life is too short to be trying to play some games.” Sing it Mary! During freshman year, this song was played everyday at dinner. At first, I loved it. Then, I hated it. Then, I loved it again. There’s just something about Mary J. She brings them emotions out of you!

THE CONSCIOUS DAUGHTERS: “SOMETHING TO RIDE TO (FONKY EXPEDITION)”
My true west coast heads will definitely appreciate this joint. Hailing from the Yay Area, these two ladies put it down during my 12th grade year. I couldn’t wait for these videos to get played on BET’s “Rap City.” Remember when “Rap City” was still relevant? [Moment of silence] Unfortunately, their two albums only moved half a million units combined, so their career was pretty much a wrap. Oh well, we’ll always have Paris.

LAURYN HILL: “EX-FACTOR”
Lauryn Hill said her heart was in Zion. I wish her heart still was in rhymin’.” True dat Kanye. True dat. I don’t know what’s happened to Ms. Hill, but she’s been on that ish as of late. Rohan Marley must’ve passed her the stickiest of the icky, cause she is gone. But enough of that. Let’s put away the bad vibes and focus on the good ones, like this song. It’s just so soulful. If you can’t feel it in your heart, that means you don’t have one.

BRANDY FEAT. MC LYTE, YOYO & QUEEN LATIFAH: “I WANNA BE DOWN (REMIX)”
The original was so-so, but the remix was dope. I can’t even lie. However, the Ray J cameo just cracks me up. Dude has been a complete toolbox for over 13 years. When the previously unknown, completely untalented co-star of your sex tape is more famous than you, your life has gone awry at some point.

And now…for something singularly perfect.

NINA SIMONE: “AIN’T GOT NO…I’VE GOT LIFE”
“I got life.” If you don’t know who Nina Simone is, then you need to read up on her. For those in the know, just sit back and watch a master at work. This groove is so perfect. This track is definitely a pick-me-up when I’m feeling down. I think it’s a good way to kick off the week.

That Brandy used to be the song. Latifah’s verse was my favorite. “You were the first to tame me.” I always liked that line.

Wow, he broke out the Nina. What are you trying to do? Make me stay on your blog and no one else’s?

May 19th, 2008 at 9:05 am Diallo Tyson says:

@Kamal
I wouldn’t say they were one hit wonders cause they never really had any “hits,” but we used to bump the HELL out of them in 12th grade.

@SweetSis & Coretta
Nina was a beast. I just hope Mary J does her justice in her biopic.

May 19th, 2008 at 9:26 am PATTY CAKE says:

Mc Lyte is very undersetimated. She should still be a star like Latifah.

Man, I was in love with Lauren in this clip. She was natural and classy. She’d rock the locs and the Versace. She was sexy, eyt serious, yet playful. She could sing and act and rhyme. She should have taken over the game.

@Lola
I’ll have a couple posts from Freshman year in the near future. Expect some Soul 4 Real, Craig Mack, Biggie, Pac, Death Row, etc.

@Regina
De nada. It was a moral imperative that I do it:)

From Nina Simone’s wikipedia page:

Plans for a Nina Simone biographical film were released at the end of 2005. The movie will be based on Simone’s autobiography I Put A Spell On You (1992) and will also focus on her relationship in later life with her assistant, Clifton Henderson, who died in 2006. TV writer Cynthia Mort (Will & Grace, Roseanne) is working on the script, and singer Mary J.Blige will take on the lead role. The movie is scheduled for 2009.

What’s going on with Brandy? Is she ever coming out with another good album. LOL on the Ray J comment…he has been a toolbox for the last 13yr. Too funny!

May 19th, 2008 at 1:34 pm Destah Owens says:

Conscious Daughters were definitely short lived and its hard to move any units the way we bootleg up here on “Foothill Blvd, the funky-ass strip….”
Good lookin’ on the Nina Simone. She is oft sampled, and has one of those voices that everybody knows, even if they don’t know it. Lauryn is indeed tragic. She needs to get with Rita Marley and find her way back.

Mr. Tyson you are the man. I love me some Nina Simone. That is one of my favs by her and I actually just saw that same clip about a week ago. Thanks for sharing.

May 20th, 2008 at 7:08 pm Chatty Cathy says:

Dang what happened to Brandy?????? I know she’s had the legal probs, I’m saying even before that she fell off. She was supposed to be like the new Whitney, She certainly has the voice. Wasted talent it feels like, The fact that we see more of her no talent brother and not her sucks.

May 20th, 2008 at 7:47 pm Binta Rohan says:

I enjoy these a lot :)

May 20th, 2008 at 8:35 pm Diallo Tyson says:

I think Brandy’s slide started with her “marriage.” She hasn’t been the same since that fiasco.

May 20th, 2008 at 11:20 pm Elsa Harkins says:

Diallo: Your blog is always fun to watch and read. Kudos!

May 21st, 2008 at 12:54 pm Diallo Tyson says:

@ReNina, Binta, and Elsa

Thanks for the love.
